Our group will have a private transfer from the airport to the hotel. You’ll have some free time after check-in to settle in or rest. Before we head to our evening dinner, we will stop for an aperitif and go over some more details of the scheduled tour. Our group welcome dinner with be a traditional Sicilian meal.

Guided Tour – Market – Street Food Experience – Gala Dinner in a Palace

                                                  

We will begin with a city guided walking tour of the center of Palermo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will see important attractions, such as the Cathedral, Piazza Pretoria, “Quattro Canti”, the Ballaro’ outdoor market, the Massimo Opera House (featured in the The Godfather part 3) and more. Our lunch will be Palermo’s street food, one of the things Palermo is known for. You will then have some free time to explore the city in the afternoon. For the evening, we will walk to the Palazzo Francavilla, a palace in front of the Massimo Opera House. Our evening dinner will be one of the most beautiful rooms of the palace. We will have an overnight stay in Palermo

Monreale – Montelepre – Mondello –

Today we will go to Monreale by tour bus. You cannot visit Sicily without tasting Sicilian pastries so will have a Cannolo tasting, a world famous Sicilian dessert. Then, we will visit the magnificent Norman Cathedral, known as one of the best displays of sacred architecture with a stunning painting of a Christ Pantocrator, beautiful Byzantine mosaics and a 12th century cloister built by Benedictines. We then head to Montelepre, a village where the famous Salvatore Giuliano was born. For lunch we will spend time with some local housewives who will share some culinary secrets with us and enjoy the various prepared dishes. In the afternoon we will have an opportunity walk through the ancient village. We will also visit the church of Santa Rosalia, the patron saint of Palermo. This church is found inside a cave in Mt. Pellegrino. Overnight in Palermo

Erice, a beautiful medieval town is our first destination of the day. We will enjoy walking through this ancient town suspended in time. We will have a hands on cooking class while learning about the history of Sicilian cuisine. After enjoying our lunch, we will follow the Salt Road in the Stagnone Nature Reserve and the sea salt flats. For the afternoon, we will visit a historic winery in Marsala including wine tasting. Caccamo – Cefalu’

Medieval Castle – Authentic Sicilian Sausage Tasting – Guided Tour – Gelato

                                                  

Today we will check out and our next hotel location will be in Cefalu’. Along the way, we will stop in Caccamo, an off the tourist beaten path location. In Caccamo we will have a guided visit of the largest medieval castle of the island, built by the Normans 1,000 years ago. We will taste some delicious sausage in a picturesque restaurant beside the castle. Then it will be time to head to Cefalu’, another medieval town located on the coastline. We will enjoy a lunch in a nice restaurant by the sea and then a guided visit of the historic center of Cefalu’. After some time walking and shopping in the towns center, we will enjoy some Sicilian Gelato. It will then be time to check into our new hotel location and you will be able to enjoy leisure time for the rest of the afternoon and evening. Overnight in Cefalu’

After breakfast we will visit the small villages of Pollina, Castelbuono, Gangi and Petralia Sottana that are part of the Madonie Nature Reserve. It will be a day to connect with Sicily’s nature. We will meet a producer of the famous Sicilian cake called Panettone and enjoy a wonderful lunch in a farm house surrounded by natural landscapes. We will learn how manna is extracted from trees and how the local “black bees” make the traditional Sicilian honey. The day will end by enjoying a memorable pizza dinner made by ancient grains while being entertained by Sicilian folk music performers. Overnight in Cefalu’

Agrigento – Ragusa

Time to explore the south side of Sicily bringing our journey towards Agrigento. Along the way, we will stop to enjoy an almond pastry, then off to see the Valley of the Temples classified as a UNESCO Heritage Site. Our lunch will be in one of the most renowned restaurants in the area. Our next destination will be Ibla, the historical center of Ragusa and another UNESCO site. Ragusa is famous for its unique architecture. After checking into our hotel in Ragusa, you will be able to enjoy some leisure time. Then we will regroup for a nice stroll and to enjoy a dinner on a terrace with an amazing view. Overnight in Ragusa Ibla

Chiaramonte Gulfi – Valley of Acate – Modica

Today will be dedicated to food and wine. In the village of Chiaramone Gulfi, we will visit an ancient olive oil mill including a tasting with a typical bread of the area. Next is a visit to a winery and vineyard in Valley of Acate. Inside the wine cellar full of beautiful old barrels, we will enjoy a terrific lunch paired with some refined Sicilian wines.
We definitely cannot leave out Italian cheese, so a visit to a cheese producer who specializes in a extraordinary local cheese of Ragusa. Last but not least is Modica, another UNESCO site and known for chocolate. The chocolate produced here is the ancient Aztec recipe that the Spaniards brought to the island. We will return to Ragusa Ibla for some relaxing time in the evening.

Marzamemi – Syracuse – Ortigia

After breakfast, we will be checking out and going to Marzamemi. This is a fishing village so we will meet a red tuna fisherman and enjoy fish paired with a glass of Sicilian white wine. Next we will head to Noto (UNESCO site) and have a guided walk to see its display of Baroque style architecture. Our lunch will be based on fresh fish at an award winning restaurant with a stop at a caffe’ to enjoy traditional granita.  After our delicious and refreshing treat we will go to  the archaelogical park of Syracuse. Here we will see the largest and best preserved Greek theater, the Ear of Dionysus and the Roman Amphitheater. Time to see the island of Ortigia (UNESCO) which is the heart of Syracuse. This is where you will be able to spend some leisure time in the evening and it will also be the location of your overnight stay.

Walking Tour – Market

                                                  

We will start our day with a walking tour of Ortigia, founded by Greek Corinthians and Teneans. We will be able to admire the temple of Apollo and Athena incorporated in a cathedreal (Duomo), that was one of the first Christian churches in Europe. Oritigia also has beautiful palaces and fountains with some Norman influences. For lunch we will be able to experience an outdoor market that will have a selection of traditional cheeses and cold cuts. Enjoy some free time in the afternoon and evening. Overnight in Ortigia

Catania – Taormina

Today we will discover Catania, the second largest town in Sicily, sometimes referred as the “black town” because of the use of lava stones from Mount Etna. We will go to the outdoor fish market called the Pescaria. After lunch its off to gorgeous Taormina, known as the jewel of Sicily. Our visit will start with a guided tour of the historic center, including the Public Gardens, the Cathedral, Palazzo Corvaja and the world famous ancient Greek Theater. You will then have some free time for the rest of the day to go shopping in Corso Umberto. Overnight in Taormina

Day Twelve

Mt. Etna – Savoca

Highlights

Volcano Hiking – Winery Visit – Godfather Scene Visit 

                                                  

Gear up for Mt. Etna! It is the highest active volcano in Europe. We will have a guided walk to view some extinguished craters and admire the remains of the last eruptions. For lunch we will visit one of the most beautiful wineries on the slopes of the volcano with a tour of the winery. We will then follow the trail of Michael Corleone to Savoca. This is where Scenes of the Godfather were filmed. This will be a real treat for fans of this film because we will visit the church where The Godfather’s wedding takes place and the old Bar Vitelli where Al Pacino/Michael Corleone asked Apollonia’s father to meet his daughter. We will sit right where the godfather was seated and enjoy a Sicilian orange juice or lemon granita. Overnight in Taormina

Today you will have a day of free time. You can prepare your belongings for departure, relax or head out on your own. Optional activities are available upon request for an additional cost. We will meet for our last group dinner in a restaurant with a stunning view of Mt. Etna and the bay of Naxos.
